Tim Rundquist, author of book about Ollie the Otter
The winning author, Tim Rundquist of Fergus Falls, Minnesota, was selected on the basis of creativity and overall quality of writing and received a $1,000 prize from Otter Tail Power Company. “As someone who loves reading to kids, I’ve always wanted to write a children’s book,” said Rundquist. “The contest provided me with the motivation for finally doing so.” Rundquist, an attorney, husband, father, and author of four novels and literary anthologies, drew upon his summers of growing up on the shores of Otter Tail Lake as the inspiration for his work.

 Ollie's Otter Tail River Adventure

As part of our effort to pay it forward to future generations, we published a children’s book featuring Ollie the Otter. We conducted a children’s book writing competition throughout our service area, soliciting manuscripts through arts organizations, colleges, our web site, and word of mouth.

The book promotes the concept of paying it forward—giving back by helping someone, with the goal that perhaps they, in turn, will help someone else. We'll donate a copy of the book to each elementary school in our three-state service area to give thanks—and pay it forward—to future generations.
