Some gifts for customers. Watch band calendars, checkbook covers, keychains, knives, potholders, outlet covers, flashlights, coasters, postcards, keychains, door knockers.

A sampling of cookbooks. Some featured holiday recipes, others featured new electric appliances like fondue pots, blenders, microwave ovens, electric grills, and crockpots.

Some employee recognition items included rings, tie tacks, glass boxes and artwork.

You could wear these Reddy Kilowatt earrings while sipping your coffee from a Reddy Kilowatt cup and saucer.

Sam Bryant, in the dark suit, was an Otter Tail Power employee and trapper from Bemidji. He presented these stuffed otters to the company circa 1970. The inset photo shows Cy Wright and Al Hartl accepting the gift. For several years these otters were displayed prominently in a display case in the General Office lobby. Their presence helped employees, customers, and the public understand the origin of our company's unusual name. To aid financial market understanding, company officers took the otters to New York City. Ralph Johnson, who retired as corporate communications director in 1987, recalls walking down Wall Street with an otter under each arm on his way to a presentation before the New York Society of Security Analysts. With General Office lobby redecorating over the years, the otters eventually were packed away until our 100th anniversary prompted them to be brought out of storage. They're still in remarkably good condition.

Memorabilia collections

Enjoy these photos of some things employees and customers have brought to us. Like all antiques and collectibles, they may provide a chuckle or jog your memory.

If you have an interesting artifact from our history that we might photograph to include here, contact us.

If something you see here jogs your memory, share it with others.

Our Hi-Lites magazine was published mainly for employees and retirees, but some could be found in waiting rooms and other public places in the communities we serve.

Reddy Kilowatt was on our signs and in our publications for many years. He also was featured on many customer gifts such as ties and tie clasps, pop bottle covers, glass covers, ashtrays, tie tacks, pencils, name tags, and coasters. Reddy is now owned by Xcel Energy.

Collectible toy trucks were offered for a number of years. For each truck sold, $5 was donated to agencies providing fuel assistance in our service area.

Bean-stuffed otters were very popular. The first one was created in 1999 as part of our 90-year anniversary celebration. Each one has a different name and poem on their tag. This year Ollie the Otter will be wearing his 100-year anniversary outfit.
